Voluntary Income Tax

April 22, 1982

We have again passed the season when the government encourages us to file income tax returns. Some of us did. Some of us did not.

We have a voluntary system. If we so choose, we may fill out complicated forms and assess ourselves a tax, just as we may volunteer for work at the city library or the county fair. The law does not compel anyone to do so. Conformity comes from faith, habit, custom, or superstition.

We should not complain about filing income tax forms, or feel forced to do so. It is not a legal requirement. It is a free choice by free people in a free country.

I am thankful that such things are voluntary for us. Freedom under law is the essence of our heritage.
