What’s good for the country?

November 7, 1980

We hear many slogans such as those proclaiming that what is good for business is good for the country, or that what is good for labor is good for the country, or that what is good for Iowa is good for the country. All these slogans claim that what is good for one group is good for the country.

The welfare of one group can never be promoted through law except at the expense of other groups or individuals.

The long term prosperity of the country is promoted only through the productive activities of individuals who may voluntarily form groups to achieve their goals.  Groups as such produce absolutely nothing.

What is good for free individuals is good for the country. Liberty is the foundation for peace, production, prosperity, and the advance of knowledge.
