Is Jesus Unique?

July 17, 1989

Is Jesus one among many religious teachers?

If we take the New Testament seriously, then Jesus either has unique authority, or he suffered from tragic self-delusion. He does not submit his insights for consideration in a smorgasbord of religious options. He claims to speak with authority at the center of history.

In Matthew 28:18—20, Jesus makes four claims to special distinction:

(1) “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.“
One who has all authority, both in heaven and on earth, does not stand among equals. He stands as Lord.

(2) “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
Others are to be made disciples. Jesus is the only way. Those who are not following Him should be converted and baptized.

(3)”.. .teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
Jesus does not submit his teachings at the bar of human wisdom. He speaks as Lord and directs his followers to obey what he has commanded.

(4) “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
The rest of us, who are mere mortals, cannot promise never to leave our loved ones. Only Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who exists in his own right, can promise never to leave his followers.

He is unique. He is Lord. He alone.
